PE opens office in Switzerland
Annette Koehler, newly appointed Managing Director of the Swiss subsidiary has 10 years of experience in the field of life cycle assessment and sustainability management. Annette has collaborated with numerous companies from various industrial sectors, international organizations (e.g. WBCSD, UNEP) and authorities and research institutes in the international arena.
Prior to joining PE INTERNATIONAL, Annette worked as lecturer and senior scientist at ETH Zurich and as sales and marketing manager of the ecoinvent Center. Annette´s primary mission will be to help develop the sustainability of businesses in Switzerland and to establish PE’s solution cluster for water footprinting, both on the strategic corporate and product level, using her international leadership position in this field.

Helping Tesco drive 30% cut in supply chain emissions by 2020

PE INTERNATIONAL is working with Tesco’s climate change team to reduce the carbon footprint of the retail giant’s supply chain by 30 percent by 2020. Tesco has set itself this ambitious target having found that the carbon emissions in its supply chain were approximately ten times bigger than the direct emissions of Tesco itself.
As the third-largest retailer in the world, Tesco aims to lead a revolution in green consumption through working with its suppliers and helping its customers to play their part too. So along with the 30 percent reduction in supply chain emissions Tesco wants to halve its direct emissions from existing and new buildings by 2020 and also help its customers halve their carbon footprint in the same period.
The project to reduce carbon emissions in the supply chain sees PE working closely with Tesco to assess supplier information, provide support and drive the sustainability project within selected commercial teams of Tesco, as well as through direct supplier engagement.
The pilot phase of the project, which commenced in September 2010, involves three product groups: milk, canned foods and wine. PE is building awareness and understanding of sustainability among the buyers and technical managers responsible for each of these groups to establish Carbon Footprinting as a major issue in business activities with suppliers in future.
Working with Tesco category directors and buying teams, PE’s first challenge is identifying and defining the ‘hotspots’ in each of these product categories where most of the carbon emissions occur so that the emission reduction effort can be focused where it is most effective.
Then using its deep knowledge and technical understanding of best practices in specific categories, PE identifies and evaluates both industry level and company level best practices. It examines not only their effectiveness at reducing carbon but also how easy they would be to transfer between different suppliers.
The next challenge is engaging and motivating suppliers to reduce their product emissions. Suppliers have multiple questions and may even challenge Tesco’s targets, so PE is working closely together with Tesco in finding the best approach to effectively motivate suppliers to see the benefits of carbon reduction and take effective measures to implement them into their businesses.
On completion of this pilot phase, which is expected in the next couple of months, the plan is to roll out the project to all of Tesco’s product groups, taking onboard the lessons learned from the pilot

On February 8, 2011, Groom Energy Solutions released its report entitled “The 2011 Enterprise Energy and Carbon Accounting (EECA) Software Market -- A Buyers Guide”. Making sustainability measurable – Rhein-Galerie certified with Gold status

PE INTERNATIONAL was involved in the planning phase and as advisory support throughout the certification process which led to the Rhein-Galerie receiving its Gold status for sustainability.
A life cycle assessment (LCA) screening study was undertaken for the pre-certification stage followed by a detailed calculation upon completion of the building. The assessments were carried out using GaBi 4 and GaBi Build-it, the new PE building LCA tool.
The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) certification scheme defines sustainable buildings across six fields with a catalogue of some 60 criteria, weighted in accordance to their importance. Points are granted against each criterion according to the performance of the building. In order to reach Gold status, buildings must score at least 80 percent. The building LCA results can contribute as much as 13 % of the overall rating.

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe presents Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
EPDs make the environmental performance of building products and building materials transparent. More and more architects and building designers are specifying these declarations so that they can achieve optimum sustainability even in the product selection phase. The EPDs for the construction elements comply with ISO standard 14025 and were prepared in association with PE INTERNATIONAL.
The EPDs document and quantify environmental impacts over the full product life cycle, from raw material production to recycling: They include direct environmental factors such as effects on climate, air, water and soil, as well as health and safety aspects in production and processing. The composition of the rigid foams and mineral wools used for the sandwich panels is examined in the same way as the environmental impacts caused by product packaging and transportation.
The "Clever little bags" by Puma are now available in North America and Europe
The "Clever little bag" from Puma replaces their old shoebox. It takes 65% less paper to make and reduces water, energy, and diesel consumption during manufacturing by over 60% a year. It also reduces the carbon emissions by 10,000 tons a year. It is now available in select stores in North America and Europe and with select products in Fall 2010.

Carbon Leaders disclose Scope 3 emissions – What’s the point?
In early November, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) released the CDP 2010 Europe 300 Report. With an overall response rate of 82 percent, 74 percent of those responding disclosed at least one source of indirect emissions that occur outside of the companies own operations (Scope 3). On a global level, all companies in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) report some Scope 3 emissions. The majority of these organizations focused on emissions from business travel. Only a few of the top-scoring companies such as Bayer, Cisco, Iberdrola, Munich Re and Nokia disclosed supply chain emissions or emissions from the use and disposal of their products.

This new software solution from the GaBi family allows you to calculate a complete building-LCA without in depth-knowledge about LCA modeling. More than 600 datasets of building materials, energy supply and end of life applications are included in the generic model, which are structured according to their utilization within the building.
The maintenance cycles and the end of life scenarios are implemented according to the regulations of the DGNB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen, German Sustainable Building Council).
A detailed report of the results, with a predefined analysis includes a comparison with a reference building. The report can be used both to optimize buildings and for the DGNB certification process.

Major Life Cycle Assessment study for American Hardwoods
PE INTERNATIONAL is currently undertaking the first phase of data collection for the ground breaking Study which will conform to the ISO14000 series of Standards for LCAs. Life Cycle Inventory data is being gathered for American hardwood lumber and veneer covering environmental impacts of every process from point of extraction through to delivery to the importers yard in Europe and East Asia.
The study will allow preparation of Environmental Products Declarations (EPDs) for American hardwood species and products. EPDs are widely recognised as the most effective method of communicating the full environmental profile of any product and are increasingly used as a basis for materials credits in green building rating systems like BREEAM and DGNB. The study will also include, as a discrete component, an assessment of the carbon footprint of using American hardwood lumber and veneers in Europe in line with the UK’s PAS 2050 standard and the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
For David Venables, European Director of AHEC (www.americanhardwood.org) the decision to invest in this new Study is hugely significant for the industry and vital for its future competitive edge in export markets, in a world where green specification is increasingly informed by a science-based approach.
He says: “This is a massive undertaking in both financial and logistical terms because the Study will encompass a wide range of operations and processes. Data collection will be needed from a variety of sectors, supply chain elements and geographical regions. What we want from this Study is comprehensive and independently assessed and verified information about the environmental impacts of the processes used to extract, produce and dispose of American hardwood products.”

The leading analyst firm Gartner has recently published a report which provides useful insight into aspects of the rapidly evolving sustainable business software landscape.
The report entitled “PE INTERNATIONAL Emerges as a One‐Stop Enterprise Sustainability Vendor” identifies some key trends in Carbon‐Reporting:
“The disclosure, reporting and management of sustainability data is evolving rapidly.” writes Gartner analyst Stephen Stokes who is a research vice president in the Supply Chain Leaders group and coordinates sustainability and green technology research. “Emissions data (or embodied energy or environmental data) has potentially significant utility for product innovation and process improvement”.

LCA study confirms positive impact of glass packaging and recycling
The North American glass container industry has taken a pioneering step in producing the first complete and thorough cradle to- cradle life cycle assessment (LCA) ever conducted for this industry.
The LCA, coordinated by the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) and conducted by PE Americas, reaffirms the benefits of glass container recycling for the environment. PE Americas was examining each step from raw material extraction to end-use. The closed-looped cradle-to-cradle LCA collected data from 105 furnaces representing 75 percent of North American glass container production.
The use of recycled glass (cullet) in manufacturing results in a decrease in primary energy demand and reduces carbon emissions. A “cradle-to-cradle” LCA includes the entire cradle-to-grave life cycle of a product while factoring in the recycling of the used product back to its original purpose.
“The study shows increased cullet helps reducing energy emissions, conserve raw materials, extend the life of glass manufacturing furnaces, and save energy.” said Joseph Cattaneo, president of the Glass Packaging Institute
While other industries claim that the transportation of glass bottles has more of an environmental impact because of the weight of the containers, a key finding of the LCA dismisses this claim. The transportation of raw materials and cullet used in glass production represents less than 4 to 5 percent of the total energy used in the production of container glass.
While each glass container has its own carbon profile, on average, existing recycle rates offset the CO2 burden when shipping foods and beverages across America. The 50 percent recycled content rate will only serve to further reduce carbon emissions.
“The North American glass container industry purposely conducted a cradle-to-cradle LCA to obtain a total picture of our industry’s environmental impact,” said Mr. Cattaneo. “We knew that for an LCA to be useful and to serve as an appropriate benchmark, it had to be cradle-to-cradle. For consumers and retailers to be able to compare the environmental impact of one packaging material to another, all industries should consider conducting complete life cycle analyses. Only then will we have clarity.”
