New generation of million-selling VW Golf

VW’s seventh generation Golf will soon hit the market. The new model has a weight reduction of up to 100 kg, and is 23 per cent more fuel efficient than previous models.

Volkswagen, a long-term GaBi customer, uses GaBi LCA Software to reduce their cars’ environmental impacts across the entire life cycle – from production to use on the road through recycling and disposal. For the new Golf VII, the company reports a significant improvement in the environmental profile over the entire life cycle compared with the predecessor model. The new VW Golf now weighs up to 100 kilos less. Depending on the weight reduction, better engines and standard equipped fuel and energy saving technologies, the new Golf has reduced its overall Life-Cycle CO2-e emissions by 13 percent for the diesel model and 11 percent for the petrol version.

With every new car model VW publishes a so-called environmental commendation, verified and certified by the TÜV technical inspection authority. It serves to inform consumers about the environmental performance of the cars, and to compare it to the performance of the previous model.

Masdar City Chooses SoFi to Monitor Carbon in Buildings

Masdar City has selected PE INTERNATIONAL’s SoFi system to monitor carbon embodied in buildings for its ambitious project to construct one of the world’s most sustainable cities, the two companies announced today.

Masdar City, one of the integrated units of Abu Dhabi’s multi-faceted renewable energy company Masdar, has captured enormous worldwide interest by demonstrating how sustainable cities can be developed. SoFi is PE INTERNATIONAL’s high performance tool which provides a central platform for benchmarking and forecasting sustainability performance and developing sustainability strategies. The system plays a key role in helping Masdar’s supply chain team and contractors to track and monitor the carbon embodiment of building materials, thereby calculating the amount of carbon associated with construction activities.

Having now implemented SoFi, Masdar has the capability for target setting and monitoring the evolving project. The city can also use SoFi for benchmarking against targets and comparing how much CO2 would be involved in producing a building in the city compared to a standard building in, for example, London, Paris or New York.

Kraft says YES to improved sustainability

Kraft Foods has launched an initiative to eliminate 100 million pounds of packaging material from its products worldwide by 2015.

This commitment was the driver behind delivering the Yes Pack, Kraft's new sustainable flexible pouch for salad dressings to the foodservice industry.

The Yes Pack is a stand-up pouch with dual handles, and a rigid screw cap closure that replaces the traditional rigid plastic container for salad dressings. The company states the product is more compact than rigid jugs, and flattens when empty, which can provide easier disposal and lower waste-removal costs.

Kraft partnered with PE to conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (Ökobilanz), which quantified the environmental benefits of the Yes Pack.
"After extensive data collection from our suppliers, technical modeling, and a rigorous third-party critical review of the study, we confirmed without a doubt that our new packaging design was not only better for our customers - in terms of yield and ease - but also in terms of environmental sustainability," Kraft stated.


As of now, the Yes Pack is designed only for Kraft's foodservice salad dressing portfolio.

Hybrid buses - Research for environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mobility

As part of the “Model Region Electromobility” initiative, sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, PE INTERNATIONAL has spearheaded research work for the platform "Innovative Drive Bus" which deals with the marketability of hybrid buses and their contribution to environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mobility.

Aside from the detailed operational data acquisition and analysis of 59 hybrid buses operating in seven model regions using SoFi software, life cycle analyses and acceptance surveys among drivers, passengers and pedestrians were performed.

The platform "Innovative Drive Bus" reflects the cooperation of 40 partners, including 21 transport companies, 6 bus manufacturers, 4 component manufacturers, 4 research institutes and 5 consultancies.

This final report provides insights on practicality, operational readiness, fuel consumption, climate change effects and the acceptance of hybrid buses.

LCA software GaBi powers new SolidWorks 2012 - more sustainably from the start

The SolidWorks 2012 product launch includes an improved user interface with more options available to advanced users, and easy access to the latest material additions.

PE INTERNATIONAL first integrated the power of its GaBi life cycle assessment software into the product design software, SolidWorks in 2008. This sustainability add-in feature allows products to be designed more sustainably from the start.

GaBi powers two sustainability tools for different user groups.

Dole has partnered with PE INTERNATIONAL

Dole Food Company, Inc. will rely on PE´s SoFi software to consolidate the Company’s sustainability data into one software system. The software will assist Dole to calculate key performance indicators and will enhance Dole’s ability to establish, manage and meet program objectives at locations worldwide.

How will enterprise sustainability solutions evolve?

The leading analyst firm Gartner has recently published a report which provides useful insight into aspects of the rapidly evolving sustainable business software landscape.


The report entitled “PE INTERNATIONAL Emerges as a One‐Stop Enterprise Sustainability Vendor” identifies some key trends in Carbon‐Reporting:

• Supply chain carbon‐reporting trends and client RFPs for sustainability solutions are increasingly looking for organizational and product‐based tools for assessing sustainable performance.

• The number of respondents (U.S. manufacturing companies) required to provide both operational and embedded carbon data has more than doubled from 2008 to 2010.

“The disclosure, reporting and management of sustainability data is evolving rapidly.” writes Gartner analyst Stephen Stokes who is a research vice president in the Supply Chain Leaders group and coordinates sustainability and green technology research. “Emissions data (or embodied energy or environmental data) has potentially significant utility for product innovation and process improvement”.

The report recommends companies ensure the full spectrum of emissions and sustainability is considered when scoping products and services for sustainability. And also consider the extent to which vendors are able to provide sustainability consulting to support software tools. According to Gartner real domain expertise in sustainable production, sustainable design and sustainable business remain rare commodities in the marketplace.

GaBi 4.4 update release

We are happy to announce that the GaBi 4.4 update will soon be released. This update includes a number of new features and functionality in response to changes in the Life Cycle Assessment industry.

We’ve implemented the ILCD format, and added a number of features that should make documenting process information, and preparing documentation for EPD certification, much easier. We’ve also updated and extended database content by adding life cycle working environment and land use data, adding the complete ELCD database and splitting the existing carbon dioxide flows into CO2 from fossil resources and CO2 from biotic resources. These changes should improve your modelling flexibility and improve your analysis. For those using GaBi’s automatic update function, the software will update automatically. Others will receive the update via email or post. Once successfully updated, you will have the opportunity to view a short video explaining the improvements in more detail. We look forward to the release!
